This course is a dive into the lives and spirituality of eight extraordinary men and women: Isaac Jogues, Kateri Tekakwitha, Junipero Serra, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Damien of Molokai, Katharine Drexel, Blessed Solanus Casey, and Blessed Stanley Rother. How did these men and women encounter Christ in America? And what can they teach us about seeking Christ in our own time and place? We will walk with these fascinating figures to find out!

Course Description

Discover the inspiring stories and spiritual journeys of eight remarkable individuals whose lives have left an enduring mark on the Catholic faith in America. In this captivating online course, Lisa Lickona, STL, guides participants through an exploration of the lives, challenges, and spiritual wisdom of Saints Isaac Jogues, Kateri Tekakwitha, Junipero Serra, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Damien of Molokai, Katharine Drexel, Blessed Solanus Casey, and Blessed Stanley Rother.

Participants will reflect on how these men and women encountered Christ amidst diverse circumstances across America and gain practical insights on how to seek Christ in their own lives today. Engaging discussions, historical contexts, and contemporary reflections promise to enrich your understanding of holiness and the ongoing call to sanctity.

Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology
Saint Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry

Lisa Lickona joined Saint Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester, New York, in 2021 as Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology. Prior to that, she served for eight years as Editor for Saints at Magnificat. She teaches, writes, and gives retreats on the lives of the saints as a way into the life of prayer.

Every month she offers a half-day retreat on the life and prayer of a saint—recent retreats featured Thérèse of Lisieux, Joan of Arc, and Charles de Foucauld. Her courses at Saint Bernard’s include Spiritual Formation, Twentieth-Century Holiness, America Saints and Blesseds, Introduction to Prayer and Discernment, and Contemplative Prayer, a “retreat-course” held at the Trappist Abbey of the Genesee.

Her most recent academic article, in the 2023 Winter issue of the journal Communio, is entitled “A Blood Transfusion for Theology: Pope Francis, Teresa, and Thérèse.” Lisa is a regular essayist for the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine (setonshrine.org) and the research consultant for an audio adventure series on the saints produced by The Merry Beggars at Relevant Radio. She earned her B.A. at the University of Notre Dame and holds the Masters in Theological Studies and Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family.

She has lived with her large family in the Finger Lakes region of New York for twenty years.
