Archdiocesan Faith and Blue Mass honors first responders at St. Augustine Catholic Church
The Archdiocese of San Francisco’s 4th annual Faith and Blue Mass took place on Sunday, October 13 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in South San Francisco. Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone was the principal celebrant. The Mass brought together parishioners and first responders from across San Mateo County, including the South San Mateo Police and Fire Departments, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the Pacifica Police Department, the Broadmoor Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol.
During the Mass, Archbishop Cordileone blessed the badges and stars of the first responders, honoring their service and dedication to protecting the community.
Father Ray Reyes, pastor of St. Augustine, delivered the homily, expressing gratitude for the first responders’ vital work. He recalled their support following the January 2024 shooting at the parish, emphasizing how their presence provided comfort and security during that difficult time.
Father Reyes also reflected on the Gospel reading, where Jesus calls a rich man to leave behind his wealth and follow Jesus. Father Reyes urged those in attendance to consider how God may be calling them to a deeper communion by separating themselves from worldly attachments and embracing a life rooted in faith.
The event concluded with a celebratory gathering in the parish hall, allowing first responders and the parish community to interact and strengthen their connection.
The Faith and Blue Mass began in 2020 as an initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice and MovementForward, Inc. It seeks to build stronger, safer, and more unified communities through partnerships between law enforcement agencies, residents, and faith-based organizations. The Archdiocesan Faith and Blue Mass is a reminder of the essential role faith plays in fostering connections and mutual support between first responders and the communities they serve.
