California Catholic Conference expands legislative resources for Catholics

The public policy arm of the California bishops has expanded the information it offers to the faithful about bills that are before the California legislature.

The California Catholic Conference announced this month that its legislative letters are now all posted on the cacatholic.org website under the Bills page www.cacatholic.org/bills. The webpage already included a wealth of information.

The California bishops decided those letters could provide helpful specifics on particular legislation and explanation of the Catholic Social Teaching reasoning that underlies the CCC positions. Already the letters were part of the public record but by posting them on the cacatholic.org/bills website, the letters are more readily available.

Kathleen Domingo, executive director of the California Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the California bishops.

In the often contentious, fast-moving and at times obscure legislative process, the CCC’s legislative letters give the faithful one more tool for political advocacy.

“Through our Bills webpage, action alerts, and other related legislative resources, the California Catholic Conference helps Catholics follow key issues before the State Legislature and better understand how the bishops of California are engaging in public policy,” said CCC Executive Director Kathleen Domingo.

“CCC legislative letters are one important part of those resources, offering a snapshot of the Conference’s position on specific bills at a particular point in the legislative process. The letters can also help Catholics understand how to apply Catholic Social Teaching to developing and complex social, political, and economic issues impacting families,” Domingo said.

The two-year legislative session will conclude this year on Aug. 31. Governor Gavin Newsom will have until Sept. 30 to sign or veto bills send to him by Sept. 1.

The California Catholic Conference also periodically emails action alerts and posts them on social media. For those interested in emailed legislative updates from the CCC, go to https://cacatholic.org/register/).
