Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral & Chinese Mission, California’s first Cathedral and ministered by Paulist Fathers since 1894, is seeking a Part Time Music Director. The parish is a culturally diverse community which seeks to evangelize in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Music Director will plan and coordinate the music program to facilitate the full and active participation of the assembly in the liturgical life of the church.


PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
To plan and coordinate the music program to facilitate the full and active participation of the assembly in the liturgical life of the church.


MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
• With the guidance of the Director of Liturgy, participates in the planning and preparation of liturgical celebrations, (Sunday Eucharist, funerals, weddings, etc.) in English and Chinese. Accompanies and assist funeral and weddings liturgies as needed and is appropriately paid per Archdiocese’s guidelines.
• Selects music for all liturgies and prepares the musical accompaniment and visual aids. Schedules musical groups and cantors for community liturgies. Obtains, prepares and maintains the slides, music and worship aid for liturgies.
• Organizes the parish music groups and musicians and schedules rehearsals to provide direction and training. Helps train cantors to lead the community in the Responsorial Psalm and Mass parts, and to possibly assist in weddings, funerals, and special liturgies.
• Directs the 11 am choir. Holds and directs rehearsals for that choir. Coordinate with Contemporary 9 am choir as needed.
• Recruits, selects and trains all choir members and cantors and musicians.
• Maintains own professional competence through regular music practice.
• Establishes and maintains contact with resources both within as well as outside the parish musical and liturgical community to facilitate the growth of new ideas.
• Reports hymn usage to Onelicense.com
• Works with the pastor to prepare annual budget for area of responsibility and administers the expenditures of approved items.
• Works with staff in scheduling regular maintenance of pianos.
• Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with supervisor.
• Initial responsibility includes 5 p.m. Vigil Mass – cantor & pianist, and 11:00 AM Sunday Mass – bilingual choir
• Typical week is 6-10 hours (3-5 hours at church and 2-3 hours preparation); additional hours will occur with extra liturgies and other musical needs.



QUALIFICATIONS
• High degree of proficiency in use of piano to assist in rehearsal and at Mass.; working knowledge of other musical instruments.
• Knowledge and appreciation of Christian liturgical arts and practices and Catholic liturgy.
• Ability to direct choirs and congregational singing.
• Willing to improve knowledge and skills through coursework and professional associations.
• A bachelor’s degree in music. Masters is preferred but not required.


SALARY AND BENEFITS: $40.00/hr. –$50.00/hr
