Title: Rectory Cook, Cathedral Parish
Reports To: Parochial Vicar
Classification: Non-exempt, N-5
Schedule: 25 hrs/week, Tuesday – Saturday (3pm – 8pm)
Salary: $23 - $27/hr


Primary Function

Under general direction, plans, shops, prepares, and serves meals to the rectory residents
in a household setting; plan, prepare and serve meals to larger groups on occasion; performs
other job-related duties as required within the scope of the job.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Function as general cook for evening meals and special events.
• Prepare ready to heat meals for off days.
• Plan variety of nutritious menus and accommodate for various dietary restrictions.
• Prepare and serve food.
• Organize, monitor and maintain the appropriate storage of food and supplies.
• Maintain safety standards throughout all food preparation and storage areas.
• Shop once a week for food and supplies in sufficient quantities for weekly meals and stay within budget.
• Monitor and clean the dining and kitchen areas for use daily and after food preparation (take out trash, clean refrigerator and sanitize counters, wash dishes, launder linens, sweep/mop etc.).
• Maintain records related to inventory, cost of food and supplies (within budget provided) and ensure timely request for payment/reimbursement of costs.
• Schedule maintenance and repairs for kitchen equipment.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience
• Any combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates the knowledge and skill to perform the duties and responsibilities as outlined herein, including successful experience of 2-5 years as a cook working in a residential or professional kitchen.

Skills and Abilities
• A flexible schedule is necessary, including weekends and holidays.
• Knowledge of techniques and methods of food preparation and storage.
• Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely.
• Ability to prepare creative menu plans for 2-4 people as well as large groups of up to 12 people.
• Knowledge of nutritional values in food preparation. • Skill to estimate food quantities required for menus and grocery shop accordingly.
• Skill to plan meal preparation with minimum waste.
• Skill to monitor and maintain appropriate inventory of food and supplies.
• Ability to lift and unload 20 lbs. of food and supplies.
• Skill to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
• Knowledge of basic computer programs (Microsoft Word, Outlook) and record keeping.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to perform said duties in a professional and confidential manner.
• Ability to maintain a pleasant, hospitable personality.
• Ability to dress in professional attire appropriate for the work environment in the rectory.
• Ability to understand and respect Catholic values.
• Current California driver’s license and insured vehicle.

Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals, or laws of the Church or the policies of the Diocese.
