They may or may not be parishioners of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. They may not even be Catholic, but what the men and women who meet on the first Friday of every month have in common is a life-threatening diagnosis and the need for spiritual support.

Deacon Christoph Sandoval launched “Strength for the Journey” a decade ago, as a support group for those facing their own mortality after a diagnosis of a serious illness. It offers accompaniment to those facing the physical challenges of illness and the human emotions that go along with it, and an opportunity to draw closer to God at the same time. The group leans on the word of God, the sacraments and one another for comfort and guidance.

“The group setting fosters connection, prayer and mutual support, reminding each person that they are not alone on their journey,” said Deacon Sandoval.

Participants are offered guidance rooted in Catholic social teaching and can receive practical assistance in preparing an advanced health care directive that honors both the values of their faith and their personal wishes for medical care.

“Strength for the Journey” meets on the first Friday of every month from noon-1:30 p.m. in the basement level of the cathedral. All are welcome.

Deacon Sandoval also leads the cathedral's grief ministry and ministry to the sick and homebound.
