It is with deep sorrow and profound gratitude for his life and ministry that we announce the passing of Rev. Msgr. Romulo Vergara, beloved pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Redwood City, California. Monsignor Vergara entered into eternal rest on December 10, 2025, surrounded by his faith community and loved ones.
Monsignor Vergara was ordained to the priesthood, answering a lifelong call to serve God and His people. Throughout his many years of devoted ministry, he became a pillar of faith, compassion, and leadership in every community he touched, especially at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where he shepherded parishioners with wisdom, humility, and unwavering dedication.
Monsignor Vergara served as a Transitional Pastor for Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in San Francisco, as a Pastor/Administrator for Saint Raphael parish in San Raphael, CA, as Rector of the Ponteficio Collegio Filippino in Rome, Italy, and as Rector of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga City, Philippines, among others.
Monsignor Vergara was also a wonderful and cherished part of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel School community. He delighted in visiting classrooms, celebrating school Masses, welcoming families, and supporting students in their faith journeys. His presence brought warmth, encouragement, and a deep sense of spiritual care to our school, leaving a lasting impact on students, staff, and families.
Known for his inspiring homilies, gentle spirit, and tireless commitment to pastoral care, Monsignor Vergara was a source of comfort and guidance to countless individuals and families. His leadership extended beyond the parish, as he championed outreach programs, faith formation, and charitable initiatives that enriched the lives of many in Redwood City and beyond.
In recognition of his exemplary service, Monsignor Vergara was honored with the title of Monsignor, a testament to his deep devotion and remarkable contributions to the Catholic Church. He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and steadfast faith, a true servant of God who touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Monsignor Vergara likewise enjoyed leading religious pilgrimages, golf and fishing with friends, and bicycle rides around the Bay area. He is survived by his sister Maria Vida De Felice, brother Eliseo Vergara and nieces and nephews Kristine Yu, Joseph Vergara, Karlo Vergara, Hywel Vergara, Byrel Vergara, and Francheska Vergara.
