In his General Audience on August 19, 2026, Pope Leo XIV continued his catechetical series on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, reflecting on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. This week’s reflection focused on Sacred Music, emphasizing its vital role in the Church’s worship and spiritual life.
The Holy Father explained that sacred music is far more than a decorative element of the liturgy. Rooted in prayer and tradition, it serves as a powerful means of lifting minds and hearts to God, fostering active participation in the sacred mysteries, and expressing the unity of the faithful gathered in worship.
The Pope encouraged musicians, choir members, clergy, and all the faithful to cherish and preserve the Church’s sacred musical tradition, recognizing its ability to communicate the beauty of the Gospel and enrich the celebration of the Eucharist.
