Rev. William O’Connell 1927 – 2024

Father William O’Connell passed away peacefully at his home in Moss Beach, at the age of 97. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, John and Margaret O’Connell, and treasured brother, Father Joseph O’Connell.

Father O’Connell attended St. Monica’s and St. Ignatius College Prep. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended St. Patrick’s Seminary and was ordained on June 11, 1955. Father O’Connell served in numerous parishes and was pastor of St. Peter Parish in Pacifica and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Belmont. He also served as Director of Clergy Education for the Archdiocese of San Francisco until his retirement in 1997.

Father O’Connell had an infectious laugh. He was an avid sports fan, especially the San Francisco 49ers; a reader of theology and history; he treasured the outdoors. He never lost his youthful spirit and interest in all those around him. He is survived by many loved ones: his family of Irish cousins, dear friends and neighbors. He will stay in our hearts forever.

All are invited to attend the Vigil/Rosary Service on Monday, September 16th, at 6:00 p.m. (visitation 5:00 p.m.) at St. Peter Church, 700 Oddstad Blvd., Pacifica; the funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 17th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church. The final resting place is Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma.

Donations may be made to: St. Bonaventure Indian School, 25 W Navarre Blvd., Thoreau, NM 87323.
