St. Joseph’s Day Traditions
March 19
St. Joseph plays a critical role in salvation history and in the life of the Church today. Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and guardian and foster father of the Redeemer, St. Joseph was the head of the Holy Family, providing for and protecting them; obediently following God’s commands through the messages of the angel Gabriel.
A powerful intercessor, St. Joseph is the patron saint of fathers, families, workers, immigrants, and a happy death. He is also the patron of the universal Church and a co-patron of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
In addition, St. Joseph has played a role in major historical events, being called upon to help in war, famine, and natural disasters.
Sicilians especially revere St. Joseph after he saved the island from a drought and famine in the Middle Ages. Since that time, Sicilians have honored St. Joseph on his Solemnity (March 19) in gratitude for his intercession. Throughout the years, as Sicilians immigrated to the United States, their St. Joseph’s Day traditions took root in many communities across the country. For example, stores in New Orleans decorate their windows with tributes to St. Joseph, and the city holds an annual parade in his honor. St. Joseph is also the patron saint of Buffalo, New York, where St. Joseph’s Day celebrations abound, and Sicilian Americans proudly celebrate long-held family traditions.
One major Sicilian tradition is the St. Joseph’s Day Table, a community celebration honoring the Holy Family and celebrating St. Joseph where all are welcome to the feast.
