United Irish Cultural Center Marks 50 Years with Anniversary Mass

The United Irish Cultural Center (UICC) commemorated its 50th anniversary with a special Mass on March 8, celebrating five decades of community, culture, and faith. The liturgy was concelebrated by Father John Ryan, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Burlingame, and Father Michael Healy.
The Mass was offered in gratitude for the blessings received over the years and in thanksgiving for those who have contributed to the center’s history. Founded on March 8, 1975, the UICC was the first Irish social center in the United States built entirely through volunteer labor and community contributions. Its mission remains to promote and preserve Irish culture in San Francisco. According to its website, the UICC fosters cultural awareness of Ireland through education, the arts, and social events, while honoring the legacy of Irish immigrants who helped shape the Bay Area.
Roger Gargano, former court commissioner for the San Francisco Superior Court and a longtime UICC member, offered a warm welcome to attendees.
During his homily, Father Healy reflected on the deep sense of community that has united the Irish in San Francisco for generations. He recalled key figures and organizations that played instrumental roles in fostering this community, from social dances and fundraisers in Miss Piggott’s basement to events at the Knights of Red Branch Hall. He highlighted the collective effort that led to the establishment of the UICC, emphasizing the spirit of volunteerism that made it possible. Expressing gratitude for those who have built upon these foundations, he spoke with hope that future generations will continue their legacy.
The Mass was enriched by the music of Christy and Hannah O’Connell. A special memorial booklet, created by Mary O’Sullivan, honored deceased UICC members. Donna and Adrian Driscoll played key roles in planning the liturgy, and their daughter Elizabeth read the Prayers of the Faithful, which were written by her St. Ignatius College Preparatory classmate, Sarah Curran, for the occasion.
The UICC’s 50th anniversary celebration was a testament to the enduring strength of the Irish community in San Francisco, honoring the past while looking ahead to the future.
